Viet Nam's largest shrimp producing province of Ca Mau has set a target to produce 270,000 tonnes of shrimp in 2012.
The province's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that shrimp output reached nearly 200,000 tonnes in the first eight months of 2012, up 12 per cent against the same period last year.
Under an extensive farming model, the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Ca Mau has nearly 270,000 ha devoted to shrimp breeding, reports VNS.
However, farmers are currently facing difficulties due to a shortage of shrimp fry, disease outbreaks and an increase in the prices of raw material.
To help farmers, local authorities have provided training courses on disease prevention and control, and have encouraged shrimp processors to buy shrimp directly from farmers.
