Sodexo has become the first contract caterer in Belgium to offer Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified seafood, according to a statement the company released today.
Sodexo, which operates in 80 countries worldwide, has already received MSC chain of custody certification for 2,000 separate sites in the UK and the Netherlands, meaning that the MSC has verified the seafood the company offers at those sites comes from a sustainable source.
Now, Sodexo is expanding that certification to four of its sites in Belgium: the European Parliament, University Hospital Ghent, Centrale Keuken Anderlecht, which includes 200 schools, and Home Les Tilleuls.
The company announced today that the MSC has granted chain of custody certification for seafood offered to all four Sodexo clients, the first caterer to get such certification in Belgium.
“On behalf of the MSC, I would like to thank Sodexo for today’s implementation of their commitment to sustainability,” said Nicolas Guichoux, MSC’s European director. “As buyer, and as a showcase for certified seafood for so many customers worldwide, the company is able to support and reward well-managed fisheries, and provide incentives for further change in the seafood market. I congratulate them on their leadership.”
Sodexo has worked with the MSC before, signing a worldwide agreement in 2011 to promote MSC-labeled seafood. In addition, the company has worked with the World Wildlife Fund to remove 15 threatened fish species from Sodexo’s menus.
“Sodexo has various sustainable MSC-certified fish products in its range, including cod, plaice, hoki and Alaskan pollock,” said Florence Rossi, Sodexo’s CSR manager. “The range is expanded continuously.”
