MEXICO – Mexico is offering food and safety programmes that have boosted consumer confidence and certainty, a US Department of Agriculture official has said.

US deputy under-secretary for food safety, Alfred Almanza, said global recognition for food standards extended to 56 countries, including: Japan, EU, Viet Nam, Angola, Nicaragua, Canada and Panama.

Targeted programmes to reduce toxic wastes and harmful bacteria like E.Coli, Listeria and Salmonella are in place, he added.

Currently, Mexico has 687 Federal Inspection System certified establishments slaughtering, butchering and processing cattle, sheep, poultry, goat and horse meat.
