Going into its fourth year of commercial production, the Opal apple, which is grown by Broetje Orchards and marketed by First Fruits of Washington, is likely to enjoy another year of enthusiastic buyers.

“We're probably up about 35 percent in production from last year for the Opal,” said Andy Tudor, marketing director for First Fruits. “Production is also expected to go up next year due to new plantings.” The increased production is necessary because of the demand for the variety. Tudor noted that this year will again see their supplies of the apple sell out completely.

“We're sold through the season again, and we're not even through with harvest,” he said.

The apple, which is a cross between a Topaz and Golden Delicious, is crisp and has a sweet flavor profile. The unique taste, as well as its appearance, has contributed to the apple's success, noted Tudor.

“It's crisp, it has a consistent eating quality, it stores well, it tends not to oxidize and retailers love it because the color draws consumers to displays,” he said.

Harvesting started earlier this month and should wrap up soon, he added. After the fruit is harvested, it will then be put in storage until it's packed and sold in January.
