The Spanish comp mangoany Siegfried S. L., based in Malaga, is facing the Spanish mango campaign with optimism given the crop's good development, favoured by ideal weather conditions since the fruit's flowering stage.

"This season, unlike last year, the mango harvest will be plentiful and will certainly exceed 24,000 tonnes," says Sigfrido Molina, manager of Sigfrido S.L. "The quality is very high and there are plenty of medium calibres, which is common in cases of overproduction," he adds.

"We are now harvesting Tommy Atkins mangoes with 9º Brix, which we'll sell in the domestic market, given the high presence of imported alternatives from overseas markets in the EU at significantly lower prices compared to our fruit," he points out. "We could say that, in Europe, Spanish mangoes are considered Ready to eat; the equivalent in quality to mangoes imported by plane from Latin America, provided they are harvested when they reach their optimum ripeness, which is what we demand from our growers and suppliers," affirms Sigfrido.

"In September we will continue with the Osteen variety, which represents our largest of Spanish mangoes and which is mostly exported, both to the EU and the Eastern countries," he continues.

Import mango campaign

In mid-November, after the end of the Spanish season, Sigfrido will continue with the import mango campaign, starting with Peru, "which has been very positive in terms of price, with a very interesting quality for air shipments of Kent mangoes for the Ready to eat market," affirms Sigfrido.

This year, the company will continue focusing on the import of mangoes and avocados by air, due to which representatives of the firm will visit Chile this week with the goal of finding new avocado suppliers, and later to Peru, coinciding with the fair Agro Food Lima, in order to meet with its suppliers and find new exporters able to meet the demanding quality requirements for the SIGFRIDO brand for both mangoes and avocados.

About Sigfrido S.L

"Only a year has passed since the company was founded and growth has been higher than anticipated in terms of brand development; additionally, our revenue has been four times greater than we had expected. We hope to continue on the same line, as long as our capacity allows it," states its manager.

Member of the Spanish Association of Tropical Fruit Growers, Sigfrido owns 65 hectares for the production of mangoes, avocados and herbs in the Axarquia of Malaga, all of them certified by Global GAP and by CAAE for organic production. Thanks to imports made from other sources the company is able to supply these products throughout the year.

This year, the company will be present for the second time at Madrid's Fruit Attraction, with a stand that will be twice as big as last year's and where they will present their new packaging format.
