Core Tip: The Food Standards Agency is issuing a Food Alert for re-branded and re-labelled cakes, biscuits, sweets, puddings and tarts.
The Food Standards Agency is issuing a Food Alert for Action because Cake Factory Outlet and Clearance Cake Excess have re-branded and re-labelled cakes, biscuits, sweets, puddings and tarts in premises with unsatisfactory hygiene conditions.

The products are reported to have deteriorated, be mouldy, past their 'best before' date and contaminated as a result of rat infestation at the premises.

It has not been possible to obtain full distribution details or the extent of distribution for the products involved. The products are thought to be sold via market stalls across the north west of England, including markets in Clitheroe, Blackburn, and Manchester (Smithfields Market). Further investigations are ongoing by the relevant local authority.

Actions to be taken by local authorities

Local authorities in the north west of England are being asked to visit market stalls in their area that may sell any of the supply of cakes, biscuits, sweets, puddings and tarts from Cake Factory Outlet and Clearance Cake Excess.

Other local authorities are being asked to check for the supply of any of the above products from Cake Factory Outlet and Clearance Cake Excess, during routine visits to market trader stalls in their area.

If implicated products are found during the course of their visits, enforcement officers should ensure that the products are withdrawn from sale and destroyed, if necessary using powers under the Food Safety Act 1990.

Local authorities should report any findings of the implicated products by emailing the FSA’s dedicated Food Incidents mailbox: foodincidents@foodstandards.gsi.gov.uk
