Core Tip: Bakery franchise Michel’s Patisserie says winning the title Australian ‘Coffee Shop of the Year’ for the second year running recognises the hard work of its franchisees and team members.
The Michel’s Patisserie franchise network is owned and managed by ASX-listed Retail Food Group (RFG), Australia’s largest multi-food franchisor. RFG also owns Donut King, Brumby’s Bakeries, bb’s Café, Esquires and Pizza Capers.

The award is part of the Roy Morgan Research Customer Satisfaction Awards, which surveyed more than 50,000 consumers during 2012.

Michel’s beat competitors such as McCafe, Muffin Break, The Coffee Club, Gloria Jeans, Hudsons Coffee, Donut King and Starbucks.

“At Michel’s we pride ourselves on premium, barista made coffee, patisserie treats and celebration cakes and this Award is a huge credit to all of our franchisees,” said Ellenor Clarke, Michel’s Managing Director.

“We use Australia’s only internationally-certified Quality Coffee Grader and Roaster, Mick Kiely, to ensure our coffee is the best. At the same time, all of Michel’s baristas go through rigorous written and practical training through our national barista course before they can make coffee in store. We also roast all of our coffee in our own dedicated facility to ensure consistency in every cup,” said Clarke.

“Our goal is to have the best baristas in town making great tasting coffees our customers love,” she added.

Michel’s has more than 600 qualified baristas working in across its 316 stores. Each store makes an average of 68,000 cups of coffee a year.

Michel’s Patisserie has won a number of independent accolades, including a Gold Medal at the 2012 Annual Golden Bean Roasting Competition, Best Tasting Coffee in Australia by CHOICE Magazine in 2010, Best Espresso at The Golden Bean’s Coffee Roaster Competition in 2007 & 2006, the American Specialty Coffee Association’s Best Espresso award in 2005 and was the coffee used by the Winner of the World Barista Championship in 2003.

In January 2013, Australian Food News reported that Roy Morgan presented awards to 37 businesses at its Customer Satisfaction Awards gala dinner, including naming Aldi as supermarket of the year.
