red wineKroger has started making a big push to inform customers about a measure that could potentially lead to wine being sold in grocery stores in Tennessee.

Representatives from the supermarket set up informational booths on Friday in two Hendersonville grocery stores. The campaign kicked off on Friday and will continue on Saturday at two other stores.

The store at 845 Nashville Pike in Gallatin will hold the first event on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., and then the Kroger at 2011 Nashville Pike will hold a second even from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

On Wednesday, the bill that would allow cities and counties to hold a referendum on wine sales in grocery stores passed a House Subcommittee. It has already made it out of a Senate Committee and now heads to a Senate Finance Committee, and then a House Full Committee.

"This is ultimately about local control, and about local communities knowing what's best for what they want," said Emily Ogden, a supporter of the legislation.

Right now, 36 states allow wine sales in grocery stores, including six of Tennessee's eight neighboring states.

"I don't drink," said shopper Stephanie Banks. "But what's the difference in buying it here or driving down the road to a liquor store and buying it. You can still buy it, so it would just make it more convenient."

The effort is a part of the Tennessee Grocers and Convenience Store Association's Red White and Food campaign.
