Shipments of this fruit, grown in the coast of Granada and Malaga, Spain, have fallen by 15% during the first five months of the 2012/2013 season compared to the same period last year.
According to data provided by the Centre for Technical Assistance and Inspection of Foreign Trade (Soivre-Granada), Granada's firms exported 1.38 million kilos up until January, compared to the 1.6 million from the same period last year, which means a 15% fall.
During January, 154,000 kilos were exported. Portugal was the largest market, with almost 70,000 kilos, followed by France with over 27,000, Germany with 22,000 and the UK with 17,700 kilos.
This campaign's cherimoya production is expected to reach 45 million kilos, which is 10% less than last year; however, higher product quality should compensate for the lower production.
The cherimoya campaign in Granada's Tropical Coast lasts for approximately nine months, starting in September and finishing in May, thanks to technological advances made in recent years that allow for out-of-season production.
