Pernod Ricard USA, a premium spirits and wine company, unveiled a new low-calorie spiced rum, Malibu Island Spiced, at a launch event held in New York City on 7 May 2013.

The light amber colored spirit combines Malibu Caribbean rum and coconut liqueur with light spices, smoked vanilla, a hint of cinnamon and natural sweetener Truvia.

Bottled at 30% ABV or 60 proof and offering just 70cal per serving, Malibu Island Spiced is the first low-calorie spiced rum and the first major spirits brand to use the Truvia sweetener, claims the company.

The spirit can be used as a base to make number of cocktails like Malibu Spiced On Ice, Malibu Spiced With Sparkling Water, Malibu Spiced & Diet Cola and Malibu Spiced Bitterspice Collins.

To launch the spirit, the company has partnered with fashion designer, author and lifestyle expert, Lauren Conrad, who hosted a beach themed launch event at PH-D at Dream Downtown in New York City.

The low-calorie spiced rum will be available at bars, restaurants and retailers from May 2013 onwards at suggested retail price of $16.99 per 750ml bottle.
