The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (CBTL), an American coffee chain owned and operated by International Coffee & Tea, plans to expand its presence in India by opening 15 new outlets in 2013.

The proposed expansion will take place through franchise route as well as company-owned stores.

Launched in India in 2008 by Pan India Food Solutions, CBTL currently operates 26 outlets across the country.

Pan India Food Solutions India operations head Amit Maheswari told Business Standard that the organized coffee chain retail market is said to be INR10bn ($171.16m) and has been growing steadily.

"For CBTL, this is where opportunity lies for growth," Maheswari added.

"In order to further expand our footprints, we have entered the franchise mode. We have opened our first franchise outlet in India in Chandigarh. Besides opening company owned outlets, we are now seriously looking at the franchise model of operations."

CBTL currently operates in 29 countries through 1000 outlets.
