On 1 June, Rural Development Minister Sandor Fazekas announced that he launched an investigation into reports of illegally imported GM corn seeds.
The reports allege that the GMO seeds crossed into Hungary through the eastern borders. The GMO seed was not brought in by seed companies.
Tests of samples from official seed imports showed no sign of contamination. Mr Fazekas said: "Maintaining a GMO-free Hungary is of primary national interest." He added that any uncovered GMO crops will be destroyed and farmers will be fined.
