Nutreco announced this week that the company has finished acquiring 75 percent of the shares in Gisis, a shrimp and fish feed subsidiary of the Expalsa group in Ecuador, at a cost of EUR 81 million (USD 107.8 million).
The acquisition makes Nutreco one of the top three shrimp feed suppliers in the world. Nutreco said in a statement that the company is working to expand its business in Latin America, with and the Gisis buyout is a step in that direction. The ultimate goal is for the company grow its non-salmonid species business from 28 percent in 2010 to 45 percent by 2016.
“The acquisition fits into Nutreco's strategy to capitalise on its leading fish feed positions, such as in salmon feed, and to expand into growth regions important for aquafeeds; notably for shrimp and non-salmonid fish species,” the company said in its statement.
