Plátano Macho S.A. is an Ecuadorian firm devoted for 14 years to the production and export of tropical fruits, such as plantain, Cavendish banana, taro, yucca, pineapple and tamarillo. It owns 400 hectares for the growing of bananas and another 200 for the production of plantains, of which it ships an average of 8 weekly containers. It also has deals with third-party suppliers, who own a total of 416 hectares for plantains and 800 for bananas.
The company sells its products under the brands PLÁTANO MACHO and EXIPRIÓN, and are mainly consumed in the United States and Europe, where there are many Latin American emigrants. They are popular among Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Colombians, Peruvians, Ecuadorians and even many Americans and Europeans who have become familiar with the dish through the Latin immigrants, especially in Spain, the Netherlands and England, where the firm receives many orders.
The company has recently introduced a new product, which consists of 100% natural vacuum-packed peeled bananas. The peel, which is the greatest source of ethylene, is removed, reducing problems caused by excess ripening and increasing the product's shelf life. It is available with 3, 4 or 5 bananas and in 3 kilo packages for catering use (16 to 18 units). It is suitable for supermarkets, restaurants or private consumption, as in addition to saving time and money in the disposal of the peel, it is very easy to consume.
In terms of promotion, the firm includes sample boxes of its peeled bananas along with the shipments of fresh, regular bananas, to enable distributors to promote them or give them out as gifts to clients, increasing the likelihood of large orders in the future. According to Carlos López, executive president of Plátano Macho S.A., "there are clients in the United States who have shown a great interest in acquiring exclusive distribution rights, but we are still making adjustments to be able to produce them in larger volumes."
