Core Tip: Australian Vintage is to expand its low-alcohol wine portfolio in the UK with the launch of Summer Light wines under its Miranda brand in August-September 2013.
AustraSummer Light lian Vintage, an Australia-based firm involved in production, packaging, marketing and distribution of wines, is to expand its low-alcohol wine portfolio in the UK with the launch of Summer Light wines under its Miranda brand in August-September 2013.

Miranda Summer Light range contains a white and a red wine, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz, which are bottled at low-alcohol volume of 5.5%.

With Summer Light, the company aims to compete with other 5.5% ABV products in the low-alcohol category that is worth £42.8m in the UK off-trade.

In October 2012, Australian Vintage had launched a 5.5% ABV Moscato - Vinni, which lacked the flavor of 5.5% ABV and did not fare well in the off-trade.

To prevent that, the winery has invested around £1.1m on Spinning Cone Column technology that reduces alcohol at 42°C instead of industry standard of 62°C and allows alcohol to be extracted more gently with more character and flavor.

Australian Vintage UK general manager Julian Dyer was quoted by off licence news as saying that Summer Light is a full flavor wine that is lighter in alcohol, without compromising on taste or enjoyment.

"Designed with the health conscious consumer in mind, a 125ml glass of the Sauvignon Blanc contains just 45 calories, while the same size glass of the Shiraz contains 55 calories," Dyer added.

Each of the wines will be priced at £5.99.
