Meat in cold storage declines 3% in July

Total red meat supplies in freezers on July 31, 2013, eased 3 percent compared to June totals and declined slightly compared to a year ago, according to the US Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Total pounds of beef in freezers were 4 percent lower compared to the previous month, and 1 percent higher compared to a year ago, NASS said, while frozen pork supplies fell 4 percent compared to the previous month and declined 1 percent from last year. Stocks of pork bellies dropped 33 percent compared to July, climbed 1 percent from 2012, NASS reported.

Total frozen poultry supplies on July 31, 2013, rose 3 percent from the previous month and gained 5 percent from a year ago. Total stocks of chicken were advanced 4 percent from the previous month and climbed 5 percent from last year. Total pounds of turkey in freezers increased 3 percent from last month and advanced 6 percent from July 31, 2012, according to NASS.
