This year, Antonio González Casillas from Villanueva beat his own record by more than 3 kilos by presenting a massive Sandia melon during the 52nd edition of the contest for the heaviest melon. The contest is held annually at the feast of San Bartolome de Villanueva de la Serena. The Sandia weighed 88 kilos and 500 grams. The huge Sandia was difficult to transport. Three men were called in to weigh the oversized contender.
But if this was not enough, the same Antonio González brought in two other Sandia melons, which took second and third prize with 81 kilos and 80 kilos respectively. The largest sandia in Spanish history was also produced by González. The price will be donated to seniors residence Felipe Trigo. As in previous years, the melon was cut into pieces for everyone to enjoy.
His secret? "To achieve this you must do everything in your power, with a lot of discipline and dedication," says Antonio González. Proper fertilization and lots of tender care might just do the trick, he stated.
