Melon production in Rio Grande do Norte will have a new destination in the coming seasons. After the opening of the Chilean market, via the publication of the protocol establishing the phytosanitary requirements for the importation of Brazilian products, Sebrae, started to prepare actions so that the producers from Rio Grande do Norte could better integrate into the new market. One of these actions is a business conference, which will take place within the programming of the 2014 edition of Expofruit, which will be held between September 24 and 26 in Mossoro, Brazil.
The idea is to bring Chilean buyers so they can meet with producers and exporters of fruits from Rio Grande do Norte so they can have business meetings. To date, the Chilean market has only imported melon from the United States and Peru. Brazil already exports melons to 21 countries, especially in Europe.
The GI mark granted to the melon from the Mossoro Region, which confirms product's quality and origin, should help increase exports from Rio Grande to Chile. "We are very optimistic about the Chilean market's opening, that's why we are going to create a program to integrate the producers from Rio Grande in this new emerging market. Having a GI should help promote new businesses between both countries," said Franco Marinho, director of Fruticultura Sebrae-RN.
