Last week Smets Food Trading started trading the first Dumara (Samantha) watermelons from the open field. Because the harvest only started recently the large demand cannot be met at the moment. It is expected that cutting will be in full flow next week. Full cars will then also leave for the Netherlands daily. This is the case not only from Greece, but from Italy too.
The watermelon season will last until around mid August. The expectation is that between 30% and 35% less melons will be available compared to last year. Nothing about the quality of the melons has changed. The watermelons are packaged in boxes and weigh 7kg or more a piece.
