The apple is still the favourite fruit, with an annual consumption of 25.9 kilos per person, followed by the banana with an annual consumption of 10.5 kilos per person. People ate 36.7 kilos per person of the various types of citrus.

In total the German people consumed 8,668,000 tonnes of fruit in the 2011/12 financial year. Less than a fifth of this fruit was grown abroad. Due to the climate circumstances many varieties can't be grown in Germany - these 'exotics' are imported.
