In Germany asparagus are again on offer. Figures from the sector indicate that the individual asparagus sales have significantly dropped. The discount stores on the other hand are gaining in asparagus sales, reports the German newspaper 'Handelsblatt' on it's website.

In the race to win favour from the asparagus lovers the discounters like Aldi and Lidl have, according to sector figures regained ground in recent years. While the sale of asparagus to private households declined by a third on the weekly markets, the sales at the discounter's increased by 40%. According to figures by Duitse Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) who compared seasonal figures from 2006 to those of 2013.

In Germany a kilogram of white asparagus costs on average 6.47 Euro at the end of April. That is cheap when compared to the same period last year when the average price was 8.95 Euro. The season did start late. Compared to the earlier normal year of 2011 the average price was 6.47 Euro exactly a quarter higher than in the last week of April.
