Harris Teeter Supermarkets on Friday said it plans to close in the next few days five of the seven Piggly Wiggly stores it is acquiring in South Carolina and reopen them shortly afterwards.
The opening dates for the store under construction in Isle of Palms, S.C., and for a store at 1739 Maybank Highway in Charleston have not been confirmed. Harris Teeter said it would close the Maybank Highway store for about a year to remodel it.
Piggly Wiggly will close the stores, then Harris Teeter will re-stock them and train the workers before re-opening under the Harris Teeter banner. The pharmacies at the acquired stores will remain open throughout the transition.
Following is the schedule for the first five conversions:
• 1985 Folly Road, Charleston, S.C.. will close Saturday, Oct. 12, and re-open: Friday, Oct. 18.
• The Village Market by Harris Teeter, 515 Freshfields Drive, Johns Island, S.C, will close Sunday, Oct. 13, and re-open Saturday, Oct. 19.
• 1981 Riviera Drive, Mt. Pleasant, S.C., will close Wednesday, Oct. 16, and re-open Tuesday, Oct. 22.

In addition, Harris Teeter, which is in the process of being acquired by Cincinnati-based Kroger Co., said it plans to remodel all of the stores and keep them open during the remodeling.
Harris Teeter will also donate to Lowcountry Food Bank all dairy products as well as select frozen, grocery and non-food items remaining in the stores on the date of closing.
