Euro area retail sales up, unemployment down in April

Core Tip: Retail sales in the euro area (EA19) have increased by 0.7%, while unemployment rate fell to 11.1% in April when compared to March this year, according to the figures released by the European Union statistics agency Eurostat.
The increase in the volume of retail trade in the euro area was driven by rises of 1.3% for food, drinks and tobacco, 0.6% for automotive fuel and 0.3% for the non-food sector.

The number of people without jobs fell by 130,000 people to 17.846 million in EA19.

Ireland, Romania and Germany have witnessed highest increases in total retail trade among the EU Member States, while decreases were observed in Luxembourg, Poland and Denmark.

Meanwhile, the lowest unemployment rate was recorded in Germany and the highest in Greece and Spain.

The retail sales in the EU28 have increased by 0.6% and the unemployment rate remained stable during the same period.

The increase in retail trade is due to rises of 0.8% for food, drinks and tobacco, of 0.7% for automotive fuel and of 0.5% for the non-food sector.

The number of unemployed people decreased by 126,000 to 23.504 million in the EU28.
