Many yogurt products available in the market contain more sugar than certain chocolate snack foods, consumer ombudsman website Consumer Research said Monday.
The revelation came after the agency analyzed 45 yogurt products made by 10 different domestic companies to see how much sugar each contained. It showed that each contained an average of 12.4 grams of sugar, more than one Choco Pie or four sugar cubes.
Purumil’s Dole Premium Blueberry (total content: 83g) and Binggurae’s Yoplait Delight Strawberry (total content: 120g) contained 18g sugar, the highest proportion out of all evaluated products.
They were followed by Binggurae’s Yoplait Delight Blueberry/Cranberry, Danone Pulmuone’s Activia KISS Strawberry, Maeil’s Biogurt Peach, and Seoul Dairy Cooperative’s Fresh Cream Yogurt Blueberry.
Dongwon Dairy Food’s Denmark Yogurt Plain contained the smallest amount of sugar at 5g, followed by Maeil’s Biogurt Plain (6g) and Binggurae’s Yoplait Nature Plain (9g).
“Yogurts have been traditionally considered healthy foods, but having too much of them will certainly cause dietary problems,” said Choi Hyun-suk, the head of Consumer Research.
“One must carefully refer to each product’s nutritional facts and decide on the proper intake amounts.”
