The launch saw the unveiling of brand’s three new single malt expressions; Amber, Sienna and Ruby - all of which have been named after the colours generated from the ex-sherry oak casks used during the maturation process.
A main theme of the launch was not to focus on the age of the whisky - which was not disclosed - but rather the colour. The tasting was led by Andrew Derbidge, director of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and Cellarmaster for the Society, who educated the crowd on each expression’s flavour, enlightening them on the graduation of colour from light to dark and describing their character and style.
The Macallan Whisky Maker, Bob Dalgarno, created the 1824 Series by selecting single malt aged in the best Spanish, ex-Sherry casks that he could source, and identified the natural colours, aromas and flavours which formed during maturation.
The Macallan brand manager, Cheryl Tang said “The 1824 Series showcases its signature style of The Macallan, embracing the defining elements of natural colour and exceptional sherry casks which have made it one of the world’s truly great single malts.”
The Amber expression held tasting notes of floral, citrus and vanilla over freshly harvested grain and delivered a light to medium finale, with soft fruits and cereal.
The Sienna delivers vanilla, zesty orange and crisp apple with hits of chocolate truffles and elegant oak notes. Dates, figs and raisins lead the palate, and then make way for nutmeg and ginger. The finale is gentle, smooth and warming.
Ruby boasts rich dried fruit flavours with an edgy trickle of treacle. On the palate a rush of ginger, nutmeg and resin herald orange, coupled with sultana and raisin. The finish is long, lingering and reflective.
