Italian grocer Conad has reported a 5.4% increase in annual sales according to figures released by the company.
This sales increase means that turnover for Conad's 2013 turnover reached approximately €11.5 billion.
The performance of private label products played a large part in Conad's success throughout the year with sales rising 13% to €2.4 billion.
The retailer said it had managed to increase its revenue in a year when Italian grocery sales in supermarkets and hypermarkets fell for the first time. The amount households spent on food was also down, dropping 1.8%.
At the end of the year Conad operated 3,037 stores; 40 E.Leclerc Conad hypermarkets, 187 Conad Superstores, 940 Conad, 890 Conad City, 735 Margherita Conad, 184 Todis discount stores and other 61 stores under different banners.
The store network decreased by 30 stores in 2013 but Conad plans to open 10 more pharmacies and 6 gas stations over the coming year.
