Allana Sons, an Indian-based meat processing firm, is set to establish its processing and export plant in Ethiopia, with an investment of $20m.
The company has signed a deal with ETG Designers and Consultants, a private equity firm, for building the plant.
Allana Group Ethiopia head Aman Khan was quoted by IANS as saying, "Ethiopia has the largest livestock population in Africa and it is striving to achieve benefits from the sector and we are just adding our part to the economy and to the development of the sector in the country."
The company expects to commence production at the plant by September 2014. Initially, the plant is expected to produce 75 tons of boneless meat daily for export.
The first phase of the project would create about 600 jobs.
Allana plans to more than double its slaughtering and exports in the second phase, depending on the market demand.
Established in 1865, the company exports frozen halal buffalo meat, coffee, fruits and other commodities from India to 70 countries worldwide.
