The increasing health consciousness in the UK consumers is likely to create an opportunity for healthier confectionary product lines, says a report by Canadean Food.
Rising commodity prices in recent years, however, will continue to impact the sector.
According to the report titled, "Market Focus: Trends and Developments in the Confectionery Sector in UK", confectionery made up about 8.4% of all food retail sales in 2012.
Confectionary sales were majorly contributed by Hypermarkets & Supermarkets at 43% in 2012. The value, however, is below the 61% share of overall Food markets controlled by Hypermarkets & Supermarkets, with the increased importance of convenience stores highlighting confectionery's role as an impulse food.
Gender wise, men account for 47% of the confectionery sector by volume, while women account for 53%.
Of the total population, kids and babies consume around 31%, whereas older consumers constitute over 25%.
Indulgence continues to be the leading consumer trend impacting the market, to be followed by Personal Space and Time where chocolate is often considered as snacking option.
