Core Tip: esmmagazine.com publishes a weekly stats review entitled 'The Week In Numbers', which to reflect the latest achievements of those involved in the European supermarket and retail industries.
6% The percentage numberof the UK's total £92 billion worth of retail sales in 2013 which were done via a mobile device, be it a tablet or a smartphone.

304 million The number of champagne bottles which were sold worldwide in 2013. A late surge in champagne sales over the Christmas and New Year period saw analysts grim expectations halved to a 1.5% decline, instead of 3%. A drop in sales in France and the wider European market outweighed the gains made in overseas markets.

$16 billion The cash bid that Japanese drinks group Suntory made for its US rival Beam. It's likely to be completed, and if so investors in the maker of Jim Beam and Canadian Club liquor will get $83.50 per share; a whole 25% above Beam’s closing price on 10 January.

0.6% The overall group sales decline at Tesco in the six week Christmas period. Britian's largest chain grocer admitted that these poor figures could result in profits coming in by up to £150 million below expectations set down just one month ago. The performance from Tesco compares to a 0.2% rise in like-for-like sales for rival Sainsbury's in the 14 weeks to January 4, with Aldi, Lidl, the Co-op and Waitrose also enjoying a rise in sales during the vital festive trading period.

$4.3 trillion Revenues for the world's 250 largest retailers in the last fiscal year according to the 2014 Global Powers of Retailing report from Deloitte.
