The European Union has agreed upon a new five-year fisheries partnership with the Republic of Senegal, after a third round of talks held in Dakar last week.
The 24 to 25 April talks covered financial support, fishing rules for EU vessels, and other issues.
"Senegal is a key partner because of its strategic location, the high volume of fish landed in the port of Dakar, its role as a member of ICCAT and especially its growing commitment to the fight against illegal fishing,” said Maria Damanaki, commissioner for maritime affairs and fisheries.
The new agreement allows 38 vessels fishing mostly for tuna to operate in the Senegalese European economic zone, subject to an annual compensation of EUR 8.7 million (USD 12 million) for the duration of the Protocol. According to the commission, EUR 750,000 (USD 1 million) of that money will support artisanal fisheries.
