On the 5th May, Parliament finally adopted the law banning GM maize in France. There were 172 votes for the law and 147 against. The UMP party was the only group to vote against the law which it judges unconstitutional and contrary to European law.
Whilst this proposal was being examined in the Sénat, the Council of State rejected a request from the AGPM (Association of Maize Producers) confirming the government order to ban MON810 maize. The text states that destruction of crops can be enforced if the ban is not respected. It has been voted despite the fact that sowing has already taken place.
