The asparagus harvest in Germany is in full swing, although the domestic supply does not yet dominate the entire German market, as reported by the German website topagrar.com. According to the latest market report from the Federal Institute for Agriculture and Food (BLE), Greek producers supplied most of the white asparagus available at the Großmarkt in Munich.
In total, Greece had a 49% market share and the German produce followed with approximately 40%. These were supplemented with Dutch asparagus and, to a lesser extent, with produce supplied by Hungary and Spain.
According to the BLE, harvest volumes dropped around Easter, while demand increased; in some places, demand was consequently not covered, leading to a general increase in prices. German white asparagus at wholesale reached an average of 673 Euro per 100 kilos, which is significantly more than in the week before Easter, but notably less than in the same period last year, when the average price was of 1,178 Euro per 100 kilos.
Regarding green asparagus, Italian suppliers dominate the market, followed by Spain, Germany and Greece.
