In May 2014, FAS Madrid, in coordination with APHIS Brussels, facilitated the release of a consignment of walnut lumber (American Walnut)
originated in the state of Missouri (Zip Code 64850).
The shipment was retained due to a misunderstanding in the documentary requirements applicable to this type of wood. The total estimated value for this shipment is $36,890.
FAS Madrid worked with closely with the APHIS office in Brussels to explain Plant Health Authorities within the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA) that the Phytosanitary Certificate (PC) that was being requested did not apply to the type of wood in the shipment.
MAGRAMA officials studied the explanation provided and worked with Barcelona’s BIP to release the consignment.
Close collaboration with APHIS and good relationship with Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment authorities was once again crucial to solve border issues in a timely manner.
