A Chilean company’s krill meal has just received Friend of the Sea sustainability certification, according to a statement from the organization.

Antarctic Sea Fisheries has received the seal of approval for krill meal from Antarctic krill. The company gets the krill from properly-defined areas. Vessels do not operate in the Antarctic Specially Protected Area or in the Antarctic Specially Managed Area, Friend of the Sea said.

The fleet operates 5 to 6 miles from the northern coast of the South Shetland Islands and 26 miles from the George Area, and does not include vessels known to be involved in illegal, unreported or unregulated fishing. The product is properly labeled, according to Friend of the Sea, and the krill resources do not appear to be over-exploited.

“We are very proud to be Friend of the Sea certified,” said Le Dantec of Antarctic Sea Fisheries. “It is a very important achievement and it proves the sustainable origin of our product and our full commitment with the long term sustainability of the krill fishery and with best practices in responsible fishing.”
