The World Cup is set to generate an estimated £508 million in supermarket sales if England succeeds in passing the group stage, according to a new survey.
The research by VoucherCodes.co.uk predicts UK consumers will spend £280 million of this figure on drinks if England gets onto the next stage of the competition.
The report also highlights how England’s fans will spend over £1 billion on food and drinks should England make it to the World Cup final.
Internet retailers could benefit from £174.71 million in web-based sales should the team qualify for the second stage of the competition.
Online sales are predicted to rise to £367.49 million should England become finalists this summer, according to Vouchers Codes.
Sales on mobile devices are predicted to account for 21.5% of Internet sales – valued at £38 million for the second stage and £79 million if England get through to the final.
The World Cup is going to be the biggest retail event in 2014, providing an “expected £1.3bn boost for UK retailers, pubs and clubs”, said Claire Davenport, managing director at Voucher Codes.
Since the last World Cup, the UK has come out of recession, she added, and with unemployment dropping month-on-month this year, she estimates the GDP will grow by 3.1% in 2014.
“This, coupled with consumer confidence at its highest peak since September 2007, has impacted on the feel-good factor of England’s fans this summer – which can only be good news for our retailers, pubs and restaurants."
With mobile expected to make up a fifth of online sales, this emphasises how important it is for supermarket retailers to have a mobile offering for the World Cup.
