2014 was a very good year for asparagus growers in the German state of Brandenburg. In this state they were able to harvest 17.000 tons of asparagus, reports the German website t-online. This is 2000 tons more than in the previous year and a perfect end to the asparagus harvest, says the horticulture society in Sint Jan. "In the 2014 season we had 90 days with steady, mild temperatures. This led to a constant harvest with a good kilo price", says the society's secretary, Andreas Jende, in an initial statement. In 2013 the season lasted about 70 days.
Due to the mild spring weather the first asparagus was already able to be harvested at the beginning of April. Normally this cannot happen until the middle of April. In Brandenburg the asparagus grows on around 2,900 hectares. 1,300 of these hectares and 15 companies belong to the asparagus field Beelitz.
