New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has signed a bill that will allow the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) to manufacture and sell alcoholic beverages.
The move will pave a way for CIA to develop a small brewery on its Hyde Park campus.
To be operated in partnership with Brooklyn Brewery, the proposed brewery is expected to open in 2015.
Cuomo said: "By enabling this internationally renowned educational institution to combine forces with one of New York's most iconic breweries, we will be able to further strengthen the mid-Hudson Valley's tourism industry today, and also bring the state's burgeoning craft beer industry to new heights by training the brewers of tomorrow."
According to CIA, the brewing facility will teach students about fermentation, using grains in brewing, food pairings, as well as the management of a 'brewpub' hospitality operation.
Around 53 new Farm Breweries have opened up across the state, since a new law to promote the use of local ingredients in craft beers came into effect in January 2013.
The Farm Breweries produce beer by using certain levels of locally grown ingredients, which will be increased from 20% to 90% by 2024.
