Morocco and Turkey are the most noteworthy competitors. In 2014, Morocco exported more than 30 million kilos of watermelons to the European Union, when the previous year it had only shipped 8 million kilos, i.e., a 260% increase; for its part, Turkey exported almost 18 million kilos, when the previous year it had shipped 7 million, which is a 152.5% growth.
If we take a look at other non-EU countries, Costa Rica grew by 19.7%, Brazil dropped by 7%, Panama registered a 23.7% growth, Senegal increased by 6.9% and Tunisia by 7.5%. These seven countries alone sold more than 150 million kilos of watermelons to Europe in 2014, which is a 38% growth compared to the 109 million kilos shipped in the previous year. Sales of these seven countries in Europe in 2014 equalled 31.7% of the total Spanish watermelon exports to the EU, which in 2014 reached almost 475 million kilos.
This table shows Europe's watermelon imports (in kilos) from these seven countries over the past five years.
