The campaigners want a new law copying one in France, where supermarkets are being banned from destroying leftover food in a bid to tackle £14bn a year of waste.
In less than a week a petition has amassed huge support across Britain - where the use of foodbanks is soaring.
Today it passed 100,000 signatures, which on the government's official website would be enough to trigger a debate in Parliament.
Founded by campaigner Lizzie Swarf, the petition declares: "Under the next 5 years of Conservative government, people will be encouraged to live an ever-more healthy lifestyle to reduce pressure on the NHS.
The petition also calls for a scheme where shoppers could donate £2 to help supermarkets deliver fruit and veg to vulnerable people.
Its popularity snowballed after French politicians voted last week to pass strict new curbs on food waste.
Supermarket giants will have to sign contracts with charities by next July or face penalties of up to £53,000.
