There is movement again in the onion export sector, "Senegal is going to open back up again, although the exact date is still not known, and everyone is busy preparing containers to send that way. Brazil's market is also open which is pretty special at this time. There is interest coming from Indonesia as well. All in all, there is new supply and that is good news for the onion market," says Piet van Liere from the onion sorting and packing station Gebr. van Liere in Dronten, the Netherlands.

According to Piet, the quality of the onion sets is good, "There is white rot on the onion sets and fusarium roseum on the onion seeds, but we still have to see how they will develop. So far, the quality seems pretty good. Due to the dry and warm weather the yields vary between good to very meager plots. All in all, there is necessary pressure on the market and that is good."

"The question is whether there is enough onion sets, and if there is a gap between the onion set season and the onion seed season. The onion set export is running smoothly and the question is when the seed onions are suitable for export. The price is at a level between 12 and 15 cents. The growers see that less onions are coming from Europe and Eastern Europe and they are very determined. That makes things difficult in the trade sector," says Piet.
