The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department in Hong Kong has imposed a ban on poultry meat imports from Lao Cai Province, Vietnam over bird flu outbreak.

This comes after the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) confirmed outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N6 avian influenza in the region.

CFS banned the import of poultry meat and products including poultry eggs, effective immediately.

CFS spokesman said: "The CFS has contacted the Vietnamese authorities over the issue and will closely monitor information issued by the OIE on avian influenza outbreaks in the country.

"Appropriate action will be taken in response to the development of the situation,"

Hong Kong has also suspended import of salted duck eggs from designated egg processing plants in infected regions in the wake of the recent outbreaks in Vietnam.

It has recently banned poultry meat imports from Tra Vinh Province and Dak Nong Province in Vietnam over bird flu outbreak.
