The summer heat influenced the mushroom trade. The oyster mushrooms especially had trouble. Gerhard Frietsch, Managing Director of FRIHOL describes the situation: “The weather this summer didn’t suit the oyster mushrooms. The heat influenced the compost, and the compost is very important for the growth of the mushrooms and thus the harvest is low.”
The prices remain stable
The company FRIHOL is a pioneer and expert on the German mushroom market. The company produces oyster mushrooms in the Netherlands and Poland. Gerhard Frietsch explains, “Regrettably the low supply barely influences the prices. Since our customers buy the products for set yearly prices, the prices won’t fluctuate. Even now when we have trouble with supplying sufficient oyster mushrooms.”
Other mushrooms are more popular
The company mainly sells its produce to German food retailers under the brand name FRIHOL. “Edible mushrooms are increasingly popular with the German consumers, however the oyster mushrooms aren’t as popular as other varieties,” states the FRIHOL director. “Overall the demand for champignons and other mushrooms is a lot higher.”
