It has gotten colder but it's still quite quiet in the trade of certain vegetables. According to Stefaan Dobbels of Gerdo leek is being bought for half a Euro at the moment. "We have had a stable market for leeks for a number of weeks now. I had expected the prices to be higher, as there is markedly less supply. This is to do with the fact that less was planted this season. But 50 cents is a workable price," he says. "The season started better than last year."

Calm weeks ahead
Gerdo mainly trades in leek, lettuce and tomatoes. "There is little lettuce going to France at the moment, there isn't much demand. The prices also aren't great: on the 14th of October it was 25 cents." Stefaan expects the next few weeks to be calm. "It's almost Allsaints. The last few weeks of October are traditionally quiet in the fruit and vegetable trade. It might have something to do with the flower trade, but the phenomena returns every year."

Stefaan Dobbels of Gerdo has been active in the fruit and vegetable trade for around 25 years and is specialised in the export of vegetables for the fresh market. The main products are leek, tomatoes, carrots and lettuce. They are mainly exported to countries like France, Italy and Poland, Spain, Portugal and England.
