Celery supplies are lagging due to a late harvest that some are blaming on the warm winter temperatures in the Golden State.
“The high heat California has been experiencing has plants going into survival mode, where they enter a dormant phase. Once temperatures cool down, the celery harvest should get back to normal,” explained Fermin Espinosa of A & Z Produce.
Prices are holding firm as supplies are low added Espinosa, while he also indicated that growers may be holding inventory in anticipation of fulfilling demands on popular St. Patrick’s Day vegetables such as potatoes, onions and celery, which are often paired with the corned beef holiday meal.
Taking all those factors into account, prices are expected to drop sometime soon, according to Espinosa.
“You should see celery prices plummet in about a week and a half.”
