Right now, Jiangsu, Shandong and Henan province in China have started the onion harvest. Judging by the current market purchase price, yields can reach around 5,000 Yuan per mu (equal to 75,000 Yuan per hectare, or €10,100 per hectare), which would be a strong return.

There are a number of reasons that have led to these high market prices. Planting hectares for onions have not increased significantly this season. Consecutive days of rain last year have affected the quality of the seedlings. Sudden snowfall in November has hampered replanting part of the normal onions. In addition, overall winter temperatures have been relatively low, hampering growth.

Since Spring, onion prices have been strong in the main growth regions of Yunnan, Jiangsu, Shandong and Henan, and the new onion season is heading off for a good start.
