Lambayeque exported 47.7 tons of chillies and peppers in 2015, i.e. 40% of Peru's total production. Thus, the Association of Exporters (ADEX) stated, the northern region, which is considered the birthplace of capsicum, continues to be the main producer in the country.

The chairman of ADEX capsicum committee, Renzo Gomez, said that Lambayeque had exported 79.3 million dollars in chillies and peppers in 2015, i.e. an 8% increase over the previous year. Nationally, Lambayeque concentrated 30% of total exports for the category in 2015.

Gomez presented the 23th International Pepper Conference at a press conference in Chiclayo and said that Lambayeque had exported $12 million dollars in canned chilies and peppers between January and March this year, which accounted for 85% of the sector.

The chairman of ADEX Capsicum said that the canned products had been this sector's main export product in 2015, especially canned piquillo pepper, red pepper, and jalapeno, among others. "We have achieved this because northern Peru is generating more value added products," he said.

The main markets were the United States, which accounted for 61% of total exports, followed by Germany, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, and Spain, among others.

Lambayeque's capsicum export basket included frozen products, which had a 2.8 million dollar demand, mainly from the United States and Germany. Meanwhile, dry capsicum achieved sales for 1.7 million dollars. According to Renzo Gomez, fresh chillies and peppers have the greatest potential, as they achieved access to the United States and will send the first shipments to that market this year.
