For Deniz Fruit, in Rotterdam, the Turkish melon season has already started. "We work directly with Turkish growers and the melon season lasts until October," explains Rahim Deniz. "Turkish melons stand out for their soft bite. You don't need chew and, when ripe, you can swallow them directly. Especially Turkish customers are absolutely crazy about the melons, but we also see increasing demand from other nationalities."
According to the importer, melon prices at the start of the season were very high, but they have now somewhat stabilised. "Now we are waiting for sunny weather, which is when melon sales really peak," affirms Rahim. Over the next two weeks, he expects a limited volume from Turkey, but then the supply will grow. "We don't face competition from melons from other origins, but Turkish melons are also not comparable to the harder ones from, for example, Spain. Turkish melons are always more expensive, but our customers appreciate them."
Deniz Fruit has over 300 fruit and vegetable products in its range and is specialised in Turkish products. The clientele of Deniz Fruit consists of supermarkets, wholesalers and retailers in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium.
