Consistent with recent years, early season demand is strong although not enough fruit has arrived to really determine the reaction of the market. From reports out of the major markets of Shanghai and Guanzhou there is more citrus from other countries, which wasn’t foreseen at the start of the season, but this fruit is expected to clear and will coincide with the arrival of greater volumes of Australian citrus.
Several regions in Australia, the Riverland, Riverina and Sunraysia have been experiencing above average rain for this time of year which has delayed harvesting, but according to Marcus it will not effect the quality of the fruit and he expects volumes shipped to be similar to last year.
“We don't mind a little bit of rain, but this year we have had a lot and just at the wrong time which has really slowed down the harvest."
A new variety which is increasing in production is the M7 navel and it is proving very popular in the Chinese market. "We haven't shipped a lot yet but what we have shipped has been extremely well received. This is simply down to its taste, colour and its shape - Its just a better early orange."
MFC ships to around 25 countries throughout the season and most are starting to order now. "The Californian domestic crop has gone on a bit longer this year in our traditional markets but will start to clear in the next week or so, and it is actually good timing for us as our volumes will increase when the weather breaks,' said Marcus.
"The start to the season has been very positive with the early fruit being of good quality and the mid season varieties look to be another step up again, its an exciting time for MFC and Australian citrus producers”
