Walker Crisps, a PepsiCo-owned company, accomplished the difficult feat of cutting their water use and carbon emissions, required to produce potatoes, in half in just five years. A new measuring technique, issued in 2011, has led to new insights into where savings could be made.

The PepsiCo-owned producer’s “50 in 5” project aimed to reduce water and carbon use at its UK potato farms based in dry areas. The company worked with the Agricultural Development Advisory Service (ADAS) to start new measures to help its 100 farmers achieve this goal.

“This initiative has been crucial in helping us to reduce our water consumption and carbon emissions, while improving our yields," Sarah Wynn, principal consultant for sustainable food and farming at ADAS said.
