"We could say the onion harvest has been good this campaign," assures Ramón Marhuenda, Import and Export Manager at Pepsur Marketing. The pace of exports to countries such as the United Kingdom and Ireland has been very good, although, at present, they have enough stock to "finish the campaign without any shortages," states Marhuenda. However, the price has not been as good, often selling near and even below production costs.
They also have a presence in countries like the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Italy. Consequently, and in order to ensure that they have product available all year round, they have sometimes resorted to onions of Chilean, Dutch and Egyptian origin; however, "we always try to promote the domestic product in the first place," points out Marhuenda.
As for its main competitors in the European market, the Netherlands is at the top, since it has a very high quality product, in addition to being in an enviable enclave for exports; nevertheless, Marhuenda points out that there are other countries that are gradually gaining ground, such as Poland, Lithuania, Belgium and Austria.
At Pepsur Marketing they assure us that "although it hasn't been a good campaign in terms of prices, we will continue working to generate added value and promote the sale of Spanish onions in the different markets."
